My fellow AIGAans,
Both major presidential candidates have been feverishly trying to convince us that this is a time for change. But we don't need convincing: change is something we experience daily as AIGA members. It's part of who we are and what we do, and not just political rhetoric.
Change means angled thinking, new interests, different questions, igniting passions, visionary ideas, unrecognizable faces, fresh directions, unforeseen opportunities, surprising friendships, and striking answers.
AIGA is constantly growing. Evolving. As an organization, it's imperative to our survival that we change to reflect not only the diverse needs of our membership, but also the needs of our larger community.
This past year, a lot of planning went into working to address and cater to the needs of our local membership. We set goals and accomplished them. You may have attended a color seminar, participated in our sustainability efforts, or used our robust website. It's refreshing to say that the list is too long to mention here.
As we continue to grow and adapt, we need to recognize those individuals who have played a major role in developing our organization and advancing our craft. Annually, through our Fellows Award, we will be recognizing local members who have done just that. This year we are honoring two individuals whose contributions are especially notable: MaeLin Levine of Visual Asylum, and Ron Miriello of Miriello Grafico. Both are extremely deserving of this honor and they will be celebrated later this year.
Over the year, we will also continue to build on the goals we have set, and work towards providing even more value for your membership dollar.
What can you expect for 2008-09?Your AIGA San Diego Board members volunteer --- yes, volunteer -- their valuable time to help nurture this organization and advance the field of design. I'd like to sincerely thank our returning Board members for sharing their time and talents so generously, and welcome eight new faces to the team. (You can meet the Board in the section below or by going to our website.)
The year's events calendar is chocked full of exciting programs. We'd love to see you at any-or all-of our programs, and I encourage you to help out with events and other AIGA activities, particularly if you've never thought about doing so. (Please see the upcoming programming section below.)
I look forward to meeting you, so please say hello at our next event.
Engage with us. Connect with each other. Get involved with AIGA San Diego.
Cheers,

Charlie Van Vechten
President, AIGA San Diego

| FUN IN THE SUN - SUMMER BEACH BASH | ||
|
No work, just play! On Sunday, August 24th AIGA San Diego sponsored Beach Bash '08, an end-of-summer membership event held at Crown Point Middle overlooking beautiful Mission Bay. AIGASD members, their families and friends were all invited to simply enjoy a casual day at the beach. There was food and fun for all ages, including the 1st Annual AIGA Sand Sculpture Competition. Tony Battiato (AIGASD member and LINK Chair), placed first in the Sand Sculpture Competition with his provocative female sand creation built near the Mission Bay shore. Beach Bash '08 attendees also had the chance to win one of five custom airbrushed beach towels or a boogie board designed by AIGASD member, Christen Bourgeois and local airbrush artist, Chris Cott. We hope that everyone enjoyed the event. |

| 20 YEARS OF SAN DIEGO AIGA | ||
|
Researching the history of AIGA San Diego is just as important for past generations as it is for future ones. Learning about the passion that has driven the chapter allows us not only to reflect on all the amazing accomplishments of the past, but serves to energize us as we move forward. It will be up to the new generation of members to ensure the success of AIGA San Diego. As part of their efforts, they have interviewed and recorded the stories of 30 designers who have made great contributions to the chapter. Some of their findings were on show at the most recent Membership Event, where a timeline of all events the chapter has held was up for display, allowing everyone to see the breadth of what has been accomplished so far. For their next step, Ito and Kuniyoshi will be working with Noé Barragån to design and program a website the excitement and camaraderie AIGA San Diego is most well known for. |

| A POSTER TO HONOR LATINO HERITAGE MONTH. A VOICE FOR ALL. | ||
|
San Diego illustrator Rafael López created this poster celebrating Barack Obama for Latino Heritage month. He hoped it would speak to fellow Latinos and others about a man of vision and leadership. López painted the piece on sanded wood, as he wanted it to be textural with authentic cultural iconography. Hearing the candidate speak, Rafael thought Obama was someone he can relate to, someone who can be a genuine voice for the issues faced in America and around the world. Nuestra Voz. Growing up in Mexico as the son of architects and teachers, López learned at a young age to be a world citizen. Believing this nation is part of a global community, he felt Obama could change the negative perceptions that cloud the future as he is a man of ideas who values and understands the social, economic and cultural issues of our time. López originally sent the image to several friends. Among them was Scott Mires, who funded 50 digital prints that were sold at auction, raising thousands of dollars for the campaign. AIGA members in the creative communities of San Diego and Los Angeles took notice, and faster than a blink of the eye stepped forward to fund additional printing of the poster. This effort was led by Jacqueline Phillippe and Josh Higgins, who created a website and organized a mailing house at http://vozunida.com with all proceeds going to the Obama campaign. Through the Internet, Nuestra Voz began appearing on a variety of websites, where it caught the attention of leaders in the Obama campaign. To read more or get involved visit: |

This exhibit is part of an AIGA Design for Democracy initiative featuring a selection of nonpartisan posters created by AIGA designers to inspire the American public to participate in the electoral process and vote in November. View the full collection on-line www.aiga.org.
Here are some quick ideas as AIGA San Diego members on what you can do:
Keep in mind that our ultimate aim is to utilize good design to motivate people to participate in the electoral process. As such, think about who in your community might not otherwise vote and try to reach them. Remember, we’re trying to “Get Out the Vote!”
A limited quantity of posters is available. If you would like to receive posters to display please contact Greg via email at info@aigasandiego.org.

This year's Student Portfolio Review was a great success. Fifty students came to show their work and guest speaker Michael Osbourne gave a wonderful presentation. Thanks again to all who participated, all who donated their time, all who sponsored prizes and to everyone that came out on a beautiful Saturday to attend.
